Your Netflix Subscription Is About To Get Even More Expensive
Netflix just announced Tuesday that they are once again raising prices across all subscription tiers in the US and Canada, this coming after reporting a record increase in the number of new subscribers (19 million) for the last quarter of 2024.
The popular streaming service attributed the increase in subscribers to the Mike Tyson / Jake Paul boxing match back in November, which drew a whopping 108 million viewers worldwide, making it the most-streamed sporting event ever (even if it was riddled with issues). They also broadcast two Christmas Day NFL games, which drew big numbers as well.
Another factor for Netflix’s success? Popular shows that outperformed expectations, like the second season of Squid Game, which drew 68 million views in its first week. Yeah, it honestly wasn’t very good, but that didn’t stop me from watching it.. nor will it stop me from watching the rest of the season when it airs.
Given how well they’re doing (a total of 302 million global subscribers), you think they’d just leave well enough alone. But unfortunately, they’re looking to squeeze a few more dollars a month out of subscribers, knowing that most will stay put regardless.
Netflix’s standard account (with ads) now costs $7.99 per month, the standard ad-free plan costs $17.99 per month, while the premium plan costs $24.99 per month. This reflects price hikes of $1, $2.50 and $2 per month, respectively.
“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix,” the company said in a letter to investors.
Clearly I’m not going anywhere, as the majority of shows and movies I watch are on Netflix. But I’ll probably downgrade from the ad-free $17.99/mo plan to the $7.99/mo plan and just deal with the ads in order to save $10 a month.
What do you think about Netflix’s latest price hike?
