First Trailer For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is Here, And It Looks Freaking Sweet
We’ve known that a Top Gun sequel has been in the works, but little did we expect Tom Cruise to make a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con this morning to talk about the movie and drop the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick.
As you can imagine, the crowd went absolutely nuts. “Top Gun is about family, about sacrifice, and it’s about aviation. 34 years ago I made a movie in San Diego, right here. I actually shot across the street in a restaurant. You all have asked for many, many years and I’ve traveled across the world and people have asked when are you going to do another one. I felt it was my responsibility to finally deliver for you.”
As you can see from the trailer, there is plenty of high-flying in fancy new jets, glimpses of Cruise’s iconic bomber jacket and Ray-Ban sunglasses, and even shirtless volleyball players. While the trailer doesn’t offer much insight into what the sequel is about, that’s ok, because we’re just happy to go along for this nostalgic trip.
Cruise also explained that they didn’t rely on CGI for the action sequences. “Everything you see in this film is real. We’re working with the Navy. I wanted to give you an experience of being inside that aircraft.”
If this first trailer is any indication of what we can expect, it should be a worthy follow-up to the original. Top Gun: Maverick arrives in theaters on June 26, 2020.
