Simple Tips For Organizing Your Garage
Garages can be a great extra space to have, but often they end up as the dumping ground for everything that people don’t want in the house. The Christmas tree, boxes of wellies, any number of kitchen machinery, old vacuums and more.
Your garage can still be the storage you need, but there is always a better way to do it.
Declutter
The biggest thing you can do is to make sure that you get rid of stuff you don’t need or want. Once items are boxed up and put in there, out of sight, out of mind happens. This means you are much more likely to hold on to things you don’t love, need or use.
As you are decluttering, you can start sorting things into piles, tools, sports equipment, anything sentimental, and then things you need to get rid of.
We can often make a lot of cash by selling things that are in working order that we don’t need – sell items and donate the rest. Leave yourself with only what you need.
How to Declutter Your Garage in One Day
Update
Most of the time, because you only use the garage sparingly – to park your car or add more ‘junk’ to it, it can look a little worse for wear. When that happens, it makes it less inviting – and you are even less likely to want to take the time to sort it out. You are likely to have a couple of questions: what is the best garage floor coating? Do you need special paint for the walls, or can anything go on there?
Since garages tend to be dark, white walls are usually a good option to brighten the space up. Interior latex paint is usually the one that most people will use for their garage – it is fast drying, hardwearing and doesn’t smell as strongly as many other types of paint.
Storage
Don’t be tempted to put boxes on the floor and pile them up on top of each other, the floor might not look damp, but a lot of garages are cold, and mold quickly spreads through cardboard.
From an organizational aspect, get some hard-wearing metal shelving, and ensure that they are screwed into the walls. Group the items in a way that makes the most sense.
Make sure all of the garden tools are grouped together, sports equipment and so on. This makes it easier to find what you need, and everything will have a place.
Make sure that you are using the higher-up spaces, too – above the door can be an unused space that a shelf could go above.
Combination storage options that use boxes, drawers and shelving offer maximum storage and possibilities.
The ceiling can be a great space to hang things like skis, surfboards or any other long or larger item – nothing too heavy, though.
Garage door
The garage door is a layer of protection for your car and your home. Since many garages have a door that goes directly into the house, your garage door should be sturdy. Many people now opt for garage doors that are activated with a remote.
Criminals are now able to override some types of remote or try to steal those first. A combination of locks might sound like it will slow you down when you are trying to leave or lock up after you get home – but it will increase the security of your door.
What if you don’t have a car?
Not everyone who has a garage space has a car – which means this space could be used for many things, with an increase in remote working, and for those with hobbies that are computer-based, turning the garage into a home office. You’ll need to make sure it is watertight and secure, but they can make great options.
Studios are also a great idea – if you have reactive hobbies, or run things like paint and sip nights, then garages can make great studio spaces. If you have enough ventilation or a window to get rid of chemical smells, an unused garage can be ideal as a studio.
If you have children and don’t love piles of toys all over the floor, an unused garage can be cleaned up and turned into a very cool playroom. After having the floor levels, you’ll need plenty of padding on the floor, but brightly-coloured mats can solve that problem!
There are plenty of interior latex paint options that come in bright colors too. So you can create a safe play space for your children – and it can double as a great space for kids’ parties too!
