Review: Sonic’s New Pretzel Dogs
The culinary world has got pretzel fever, with everyone from Wendy’s to Ruby Tuesday now offering pretzel buns. Not to be outdone, Sonic has jumped into the fray with their newest offerings, the Pretzel Dogs.
As the name suggests, the Pretzel Dog is a hot dog that replaces the traditional bun with a soft-baked pretzel bun. Sonic offers up two varieties: The Original Pretzel Dog and the Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog.
Sonic’s been advertising these Pretzel Dogs for weeks now, so I finally decided to drive down and try them for myself. And since I couldn’t decided which variety I wanted to try out, I ordered them both!
First up was the Original Pretzel Dog, a 100% pure beef hot dog topped with yellow mustard and served on a soft-baked pretzel bun. At first glance, it didn’t look much different than a regular hot dog. But when I took a bite of the hot dog, I was absolutely blown away! As a Philly native, I’m particular when it comes to my soft pretzels, and I’m happy to report that Sonic totally nailed it with their pretzel roll. The combination of these two flavors work perfectly together, and the mustard sends it over the top. AMAZING!
Next up was the Cheesy Bacon Pretzel Dog, a 100% pure beef hot dog topped with crispy bacon, grilled onions, and warm melted cheese sauce served on a soft-baked pretzel bun. I love all of these ingredients individually, but I wasn’t quite sure how the combination would work. It was pretty good, but I thought it was unnecessarily busy, with some of the flavors overwhelming others. My dog could have used more cheese and less bacon, as I think that would have helped balance things out.
I thought both Sonic’s Pretzel Dogs were great, but at the end of the day, the Original Pretzel Dog really won me over. Sorry Chili Cheese Coney, you’ve been replaced by something even better.
If you’re a fan of pretzels and hot dogs, head over to Sonic and order one (or two) Pretzel Dogs and see what all the fuss is about!

That’s too bad.. There’s one in North Bergen NJ, so if you’re ever in the area, make sure you stop by and try it out.
