Review: Bow & Truss Restaurant | North Hollywood, CA
Bow & Truss is a Latin inspired restaurant with very unique tastes just like it’s surroundings in the newly up-and-coming NoHo arts district. This place could not have been any more fitting for the community.
When you first enter, you are invited into a wide outdoor lounge patio. It has a very downtown rooftop modern look, yet it personifies the cozy feel that continues into the restaurant, perfect for large groups.
The first thing you’ll see on the menu are cheeses, ranging from soft to semi-firm, goat, cow or sheep’s milk, and even an combinations of all three. After that are the fine cured meats, with all kinds for every type of palate, Serrano to Chorizo with a full explanation by the wait staff. All complimented by pine nuts, sweet jams, and freshly toasted bread.
I found all of these blended with one another very well, and left me wanting to try different mixtures. Meats, cheeses and bread – What more could you ask for?
Seeing as this was a Latin-influenced restaurant, I wanted to try the seafood side of the menu for my own curiosity, so I went with the scallops that also came with saffron polenta, corn & pepper salsa and a roasted pepper sauce. I like food that isn’t very complicated and I got just that. The scallops were seared perfectly and the saffron polenta was pleasantly delightful.
My friend ordered the stuffed trout, which is stuffed with serrano ham and thyme. When I heard her order that, I was a bit surprised, since it seemed like a very odd mix. Of course, when you put something as bold as this on the menu, you probably a skilled chef on hand. I didn’t want to admit it at first, but I actually liked the stuffed trout more than my scallops. The trout was almost buttery, and the serrano ham didn’t overpower the trout like I had feared. Again, this was a creative dish that I was not expecting to taste very good, but thanks to my friend venturing out of her comfort zone, we got to enjoy something new.
We asked our waitress what the most popular dessert item was. We were told one of the off-menu specials was a sweet Dulce de Leche cheesecake with a crust made in-house. To be honest, it was okay but nothing to write home about.
There were so many other items on the menu that I wanted to order, so I’ll definitely be coming back again. Maybe next time we’ll do brunch, as there are many appealing items on the menu perfect for a lazy Sunday!
