Little Fish - Dining Room

Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia’s Queen Village, Little Fish is a small but mighty seafood spot that has earned a cult-like following among locals and visiting foodies alike. With only a handful of tables and an intimate atmosphere, this BYOB restaurant offers a dining experience that feels both exclusive and welcoming—like you’ve stumbled upon one of the city’s best-kept secrets.

The Story Behind Little Fish

Originally opened in the mid ’90s at 600 Catharine Street, Little Fish has changed hands more than a few times over the years but consistently maintained its reputation as one of Philly’s best seafood destinations.

In November 2016, Little Fish was sold to its current chef/owner Chef Alexander Yoon, who elevated the restaurant’s profile with his refined yet approachable take on fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. Yoon, a Philadelphia native (spending his early years in Olney), honed his skills at top culinary institutions before taking the reins at Little Fish and making it his own.

Yoon’s philosophy revolves around simplicity—letting the quality of the ingredients shine through with minimal manipulation. His dishes are beautifully plated and full of bold flavors, demonstrating a deep respect for both the seafood and the craft of cooking.

The Dining Experience

What makes Little Fish even more special is its unpretentious, intimate vibe. The restaurant is really small, with only 16 seats. With an open kitchen, you can watch the chefs meticulously prepare each dish, adding to the personal and immersive dining experience.

The BYOB policy also means you can bring your favorite bottle to pair with your meal, making the experience even more customizable and budget-friendly.. at least when it comes to the alcohol portion of the meal, as the food prices here are definitely on the higher end.

Must-Try Dishes

The menu at Little Fish is rooted in classical techniques and flavored with Asian influences. The menu changes based on seasonality and freshly available ingredients – winter menus often include house made pastas and broths, while summer menus feature local fruits and vegetables.

Here are a few standout dishes that you’ll definitely want to order for the table.

1. Chimichurri Bread

While it seemed a little ridiculous paying $7 for bread given that it’s free at most restaurants, I have to admit that it was worth it. The rich, herbaceous chimichurri sauce is generously spread over a crusty, perfectly toasted seeded baguette, making for a bold and satisfying bite. And don’t sleep on their honey date butter either. It’s an unexpected but delightful addition to a seafood-focused meal.

2. Scallop Toast

One of the restaurant’s most unique and beloved dishes, the Scallop Toast is a must-try. As you can see from the photo, this dish features shaved raw scallops dressed in chili oil, soy, chives, served on a buttery sesame toast. It’s a phenomenal, simple dish that’s elevated with a blend of vibrant sauces and delicate garnishes, bringing out the natural sweetness of the scallops, and perfectly encapsulating Little Fish’s balance of texture, flavor, and finesse.

3. Seared Scallops

If you’re a lover of scallops, the Seared Scallops here are a must. Cooked to a perfect golden brown on the outside while remaining buttery and tender inside, these scallops are paired with vichyssoise and black truffle that enhance their natural sweetness and depth of flavor. WOW!

4. Whole Roasted Branzino

A main course that never disappoints, the Whole Roasted Branzino is cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and tender, flaky flesh. Often served with seasonal vegetables and a delicate sauce, it’s a dish that showcases Yoon’s expertise in allowing seafood to take center stage. We also had another fish dish that was a special that night, and it blew my mind, it was that good!

5. Prix-Fixe Menu

If you want to truly experience Little Fish at its best, book a seat for their Prix-Fixe Menu. This multi-course meal allows Chef Yoon to showcase his creativity and skill with a lineup of exquisite seafood dishes. Each course is a surprise, often featuring playful twists on classic seafood preparations, and it’s one of the most sought-after dining experiences in Philly. You won’t leave hungry after this meal, that’s for sure.

Final Verdict

If you’re a seafood lover visiting Philadelphia, Little Fish should be at the top of your list. Chef Alex Yoon’s thoughtful approach to fresh ingredients and elegant simplicity makes for an unforgettable meal. Whether you’re indulging in the Prix Fixe Menu or simply ordering dishes ala carte, you’ll walk away understanding why this small spot has such a big reputation.

Pro Tip: The restaurant is super tiny and fills up fast, so make sure to snag a reservation well in advance. And don’t forget to bring a great bottle of wine to complement the outstanding flavors coming from the kitchen, since it is BYOB.
