Broncos linebacker Von Miller had spent his entire 11-year career in Denver. But that changes today, with the Broncos shipping the eight-time Pro Bowler off to Los Angeles in exchange for two second-day 2022 draft picks. As you can imagine, the Rams are thrilled to bring him on board, adding to an already scary defense. But Broncos fans certainly didn’t see this coming, the trade news coming as quite a surprise.

As it turns out, there may be more to the story than meets the eye, with a source telling Pro Football Network that there was friction between Von Miller and his teammates, and it’s all because of Miller’s annual Halloween party. He tends to go all out on things, and this year’s party even included a performance from Migos rapper Quavo. As you can imagine, this party wasn’t exactly cheap, costing him a reported $100,000 or more.

Where things went sideways is when Miller asked his teammates to kick in for his annual Halloween party, as they had assumed that they were invited guests to the party, not co-hosts. Miller even wanted rookies to contribute several thousand dollars for an event that they had no role in planning. Miller reportedly became upset when some teammates declined to help pay for his party, and Von Miller even threatened to cancel the party, per some text messages.

Now mind you, Miller has earned over $90 million in his career, so $100,000 is a drop in the bucket for him. But he felt wronged by this “unpaid debt”, and he threatened to disrupt the Broncos’ locker room chemistry over this. It’s said that coach Vic Fangio and general manager George Paton became aware of the rift, which may have factored into the team’s decision to trade him.

Broncos tight end Noah Fant confirmed key portions of the report during an appearance on “Stokley and Zach” on 104.3 The Fan:

Naturally, the team denies that the drama over Miller’s party was a factor in the decision to trade him. And truthfully, we’ll probably never find out the full story. But given that Miller was set to become a free agent after this season, the trade suggests that the Broncos either didn’t expect to or didn’t want to bring Miller back in 2022.

It should be interesting to see how Von Miller settles into life with the Rams, a team that’s sitting at 7-1 and are gunning hard for a Super Bowl run this season. Hopefully the Broncos won’t live to regret this trade.
