Finally The Geeky Male Can Dress Better
The geek male, long perceived as the fashion outcast, is suddenly “in.” The geek look is now highly sought after, and it turns out all of that useless knowledge is cute and attractive. It’s not 70’s retro, or New Wave Back to the Future cool, it’s a subtle look that highlights the best features of your body without overstating yourself.
With Christmas right around the corner, it’s a good time to add some new clothes to your wish list. Here are some thoughts on where to start…
Hair
Hairstyles are highly dependent on the kind of hair you have, which is why it’s important to find a stylist. We’re not saying stay out of chain stores, we’re saying find a stylist you trust and get his or her opinion on length. Invest in product and use it to add shine or hold hair in place. Don’t over use your product, and get your hair cut regularly.
Jeans
Get fitted for jeans, and buy two pair. They may be a little pricey out of the gate, but good jeans will last a lifetime. You can also go for a cheaper alternative and get the jeans tailored if you can’t afford the high-end brands or just don’t like the styles. You should have one light and one dark pair to wear as needed.
Shirts
The classic 70’s style ringer tees are in, and you can order custom t shirt printing with your favorite logos. These vintage looking shirts usually have a lighter color for the shirt, but a darker color for the rings around the neck and arms. Toss a blazer or a leather jacket over the tee as winter approaches for a classic look that keeps you warm. Pair it with dark shoes, and be sure to alternate your colors on top and bottom if you’re on the tall and skinny side.
Cologne
Cologne is completely optional, but body odor is a negative that you want to get rid of ASAP. A man’s natural scent has a certain allure to it, but if you haven’t bathed for days you’re not in that category. Cologne can help, but go beyond AXE and into the department store cologne section. Try a tester on your skin and bring a friend with you to get a second opinion.
Shopping
The online marketplace is your friend, but it can be difficult to size yourself. Get yourself fitted at a tailor (most laundromats can help you) and keep those measurements handy when you order online. Remember, when in doubt, order larger. It’s easier to get something slimmed down to fit you.
Coupon codes are also available at certain retailers. Be sure to search for coupon codes before you finish purchasing your items.
Accents
Accessories are easy to find and tend to complete your look. They could be any of the DC Comics versions of Converse sneakers, maybe a Nintendo themed sweat band or simply wearing the right pair of glasses. The key to accessories is keeping your eyes open and having a theme in mind. Men don’t need to worry as much about colors, but the right trinket can look cool and complete an outfit.
What Not to Do
Don’t let the casual side become all-encompassing. If you find yourself on a date and you’re wearing sandals, it’s time to rethink your stance on fashion. Don’t wear clothes that are too baggy, and sagging is out. And, as cool as the song was, it’s not cool wearing your sunglasses at night.
Overall, geek fashion is a blend of the casual and the conservative. Invest in a nice blazer, a great pair of jeans and you’re halfway there.
